Natural Wines

Natural wines have been produced in an environmentally-friendly way, showing the utmost respect for nature, with the least intervention possible, using natural resources to full advantage, promoting biodiversity and creating minimal waste.

There’s no addition of sulphur, not even for preservation, which means the small amount of sulphur that can be found in these wines is totally residual, it’s what is produced naturally during alcoholic fermentation; therefore wines with no added sulphites or sulphite-free wines are also terms used.

In our online shop, you can buy from the best selection of natural wines. And if you'd like to know more about them, take a look at this article on our blog: What are natural wines?

The demand for natural wines has surged in recent times due to their distinct taste and production process. The grapes used to make these wines are grown in organic or biodynamic environments, with no artificial additives or pesticides. This approach produces wines that are authentic and truly reflect the terroir of their origin.

Do all organic wines have no sulfites?

One of the most common questions asked about organic wine is whether they contain sulphites or not.

It is a common misconception that all organic wines do not contain sulphites. The use of sulphur dioxide (SO2) as a preservative is still permitted in organic winemaking, although at lower levels than conventional wines. However, many wineries choose to make their wine without any added sulphites, known as “natural” or “no added sulphite” wines.

The decision to add or not add sulphites ultimately comes down to the winemaker's preference and philosophy.

What is the benefit of sulfite-free wine?

These wines offer several benefits beyond being simply allergen-free. For one, sulfite-free wine is often considered healthier since it contains fewer additives and chemicals than traditional wines. Additionally, some suggest that sulfite-free wine has a more pure taste since it lacks the chemical aftertaste found in traditional wines.

Despite these benefits, it's important to note that not all sulfite-free wines are created equal.

Sulfites are a common preservative added to wine during the winemaking process. However, many people are sensitive and even allergic to sulfites, which can cause adverse reactions like headaches or asthmatic symptoms. In response to this growing concern, more and more wineries have started producing sulfite-free wines.
