Zind-Humbrecht is one of the best wine-producing establishments in Alsace, if not the best. The exceptional nature of some of its vineyards, the diversity of its soils, the finest quality grapes and the diligence of the vine-growing and wine-making team, are the four mainstays on which its good name rests, a result of the union of two wine-producing families from Wintzenheim (the Zinds) and Gueberschwihr (the Humbrechts).
The present-day winery is located in the very heart of the Herrenweg vineyard, in the locality of Turckheim, and counts on an estate of 40 hectares of vineyards, some of which are situated in truly exceptional terroirs, such as the famous Rangen de Thann, with its volcanic soil, unique in Alsace. The team is devoted to carrying out daily tasks with all due care, and passionately committed to the making of high quality wines, in the time-honoured way passed down from generation to generation since the 17th Century. Heading up this team today is Olivier Humbrecht, a strong supporter of biodynamic agriculture and a Master of Wine, a title that substantiates his extensive knowledge.
Zind-Humbrecht produces a wide range of wines, very different from one another, even from one vintage to another, due to the great respect shown for nature; they are wines with character, on whose personality the soil, microclimate and vintage clearly leave their mark. Depending on the year’s harvest, their output is estimated to amount to between 60,000 and over 100,000 bottles a year, and between 75% and 85% of these are destined for export. Figuring among their wines are some of the most highly-rated Riesling and Pinot Gris wines in the world, excellent whites, all matured in large old oak casks, wines fit for long-term cellaring.
