Bodegas y Viñedos Ponce

Bodegas y Viñedos Ponce is a family-run winery which has successfully enabled the small denomination of Manchuela to start becoming known on the international scene. Their original and honest wines have developed into essential brands for finding out what this area produces, and in particular, for discovering the Bobal, a variety which is increasingly more appreciated thanks to the efforts and dedication of experienced winemakers such as Juan Antonio Ponce. Ponce is often called "the Bobal magician" thanks to his achievements with, and his love for, this variety. He learned his winemaking arts with Cía. de Vinos Telmo Rodríguez, acquiring knowledge and working experience with different appellations and their diverse soils and climates. At the age of just 24 he then decided to start his own project in his home town of Iniesta (La Manchuela-Cuenca), aiming to bring with him the proud traditions and ideas of the 'cosecheros' (winegrowers) production model he'd seen in Rioja Alavesa.

Founded in 2005 with 17 ha of vineyards, the winery currently works with a total of 35 hectares, and the majority of them are planted with the Bobal variety, growing vines aged between 30 and 85 years old. The vineyards, tended using traditional agricultural methods, with virtually no chemical treatments and under biodynamic precepts, are located at an altitude of 700 to 820 metres between the Júcar and Cabriel rivers, on soils that are mostly clay-calcareous, although with limestone prevalent in some parcels. Utilising this soil diversity, convinced of the area's potential and with moderate yields, the Ponce family succeeds in presenting us with a wide range of wines, all of which are vibrant and expressive, abounding in the character these lands provide and offering us very good value for money.
