Bodega Las Calzadas is a family winery located in Pozoamargo, Cuenca. Here, traditional winemaking methods are revived, using old clay jars from wineries dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These methods have been brought back under the Tinácula brand, which comes from Latin and means “small jar.”
The vineyards, which are more than 80 years old, are organically farmed and cared for by a family team. This team is made up of José Julián Sevilla, grower and winemaker; Josefina Medina; and Daniel Sevilla, an oenologist graduated from the University of La Rioja, who has also worked in La Rioja, Australia and New Zealand. At just 23, Daniel decided to return to his village of 300 inhabitants to begin the challenging task of starting a business and recovering vineyards and winemaking techniques that had been lost.
At Bodega Las Calzadas, they have managed, with great effort, to rescue old Manchegan jars of different capacities, which are now difficult to find. Some of these jars are more than 100 years old and, after 70 years of abandonment, have been restored to give the Tinácula wines a distinctive character.
In short, Bodega Las Calzadas seeks excellence by using grapes from its own vineyards, which are more than 50 years old. They combine the family tradition of making wine in jars with the experience gained through university studies and practical cellar knowledge, resulting in unique and different wines.
