The wine

Schiavenza has been operating in the Serralunga d'Alba territory since 1956. The winery, started by brothers Vittorio and Ugo Alessandria, is now looked after by Luciano Pira, agronomist and cellarer, assisted by his wife Maura Alessandria and brother-in-law Walter Anselma. In the past the farmhouse and the surrounding land were owned by the Opera Pia Barolo; the work was carried out by sharecroppers called "schiavenza": hence the curious name of the property. Currently the farm extends over about ten hectares of vineyards in the territory of Serralunga d'Alba, as well as a plot in Monforte d'Alba, in Perno.

The winery is one of the most traditional in the territory, one would say both for culture and for vinification and ageing techniques. The wines, which rest in large barrels, are not filtered, and come from vineyards raised without the use of chemicals. It is a small cellar, in which familiarity and craftsmanship can be breathed from the very first moment. Production focuses exclusively on reds. In addition to the convivial wines, i.e. Dolcetto, a very straight and typical Barbera and Langhe Nebbiolo, there are naturally the Barolos.

Barolo Serralunga is the result of a blend of Nebbiolo grapes harvested from vineyards with different exposures, all in the Serralunga d'Alba municipality, as per tradition. It is an austere Barolo, of indomitable and nervous elegance. Ruby-coloured with garnet echoes, the bouquet is floral, fruity, spicy, balsamic, earthy, intriguing, in continuous evolution. In theory it is the simplest Schiavenza Barolo, yet it expresses the character of a thoroughbred. Perky acidity, biting but never angular tannin, and unforgettable persistence complete its typical and sumptuous profile.
