The wine

Making up about 80% of the blend, Grenache is the star grape in this Châteauneuf du Pape wine, blended with small amounts of other varieties growing in the different terroirs of the Domaine Usseglio Raymond & Fils winery. Aromas of red fruit such as cherries and plums stand out whereas hints of undergrowth give the wine its added complexity. A well-structured wine with elegant tannins, a wide mouth, a wonderful purity, and a long finish with roasted and spicy hints.

It is better to decant the wine if it is to be drunk young. As it is bottled unfiltered, there may be some deposits in the bottle — which are in fact natural and beneficial for the wine's ageing process.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker, Jancis Robinson, and Suckling

Cherry and pomegranate fruit are joined by hints of asphalt and cracked pepper on the nose of Usseglio's 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape. It's spicy and savory overall, with a silky feel to the medium to full-bodied palate. Not overly concentrated, it's nevertheless nicely balanced, with the delicious tension of just-ripe fruit and a bright, lingering finish.

Tasted blind. Powerful youthful bready nose. Dense palate with some good underlying freshness – the tannins are currently tight and chalky and pretty drying, but there is fruit to see this resolve over the years.

Smells just like dry clay on a summer’s day. There’s a good dried fruit character on the nose too, but it’s quite discreet. Excellent balance of healthy tannins, fruit and minerality of the medium to full-bodied palate. Long, warm and polished finish. Drink or hold.

Domaine Raymond Usseglio & Fils

With 24 hectares of vineyards, Domaine Raymond Usseglio & Fils is one of the top wineries among the Châteauneuf-du-Pape crus. The winery was founded by Francis Usseglio, an Italian who set up his own winemaking production here, probably inspired by wine traditions from his home country. It was not until 1963 that Francis' son, Raymond Usseglio started to produce wines under the winery's present name. Decades later, run now by Raymond and his son, Stephane, their wines have...
