Wine from Bizkaiko Txakolina
The name Txakoli from Biscay comes from the Basque expression "etxeko ain", which means "just enough for home", which is very appropriate to explain that in the 12th and 13th centuries, Txakoli was a wine for local consumption.

Bizkaiko Txakolina
The name Txakoli from Biscay comes from the Basque expression "etxeko ain", which means "just enough for home", which is very appropriate to explain that in the 12th and 13th centuries, Txakoli was a wine for local consumption.
At the end of the 19th century, the "chacolines" appeared, taverns in which wine was sold as well as fish, and its consumption became popular again. From 1980 onwards, a small group of producers focused on increasing the quality of the wine, a process that culminated in 1994 with the granting of the DO.
The sea, the Hondarrabi Yuri grape and the sloping clay soils in search of the sun explain the character of the wines of Vizcaya. The white wines, the majority, are fruity and floral, light, fresh and subtly herbaceous. A small percentage of rosé and red wine is also produced, with the Hondarrabi Beltza variety.
