Wine from Moulin-à-Vent AOC
The name Moulin-à-Vent comes from the windmill that stood atop one of the hills near the village, not from the municipality itself, which is actually called Roomanèche-Thorins. The AOC is one of the most prestigious in Beaujolais, and its wines are always among the best, which is reflected in their prices and the difficulty in finding any of their bottles, despite being one of the villages with the highest production (650 ha). Here, the granite soils are covered with a layer of manganese-rich sand that gives the wines their distinctive character; the best are aged in oak for longer and age elegantly for over a decade, resembling the great Pinot Noir reds.
