Nocera

In the Mediterranean and dry climate of the Messina hinterland, in Sicily, nocera is the most typical native grape variety. The wines of the area, especially red, have a very ancient history, which draws on the mythical mamertino concelebrated by Julius Caesar, Pliny and Strabo. Nocera is cultivated in the hills from Capo Milazzo to Nebrodi, on clayey-calcareous marl soils of marine origin, with the presence of schists and volcanic rocks. In the area, on which the Faro DOC and Mamertino now are, the nerello mascalese and the nerello cappuccio, native to Etna, are noble travel companions. Vinified as a single variety, it produces warm and intense wines, floral and balsamic on the nose with echoes of Mediterranean scrub and red fruits, on the palate, slightly rustic, with excellent structure, lively tannin and important acidity, characteristics that make it also quite long-lived.
