Vins del Massís

The Garraf region in the DO Penedés appellation has a long tradition of winemaking. Spreading over almost 13,000 hectares, this area has vineyards at a wide variety of altitudes — ranging from those at virtually sea-level, to plots at 500 metres high. Soils are poor and calcareous, and it's relatively easy to find remains of marine fossils. The plots are located among Mediterranean woodlands with their fragrant aromas of rosemary and thyme while sea breezes cool the vines. All of these factors come together to produce wines with a unique character; wines that Benjamín Romeo with his love of the land and good wines could not resist.

After becoming internationally well-known for his Rioja wines (Contador), Benjamín could not resist the charm of the Garraf region once he'd visited it and he decided to make a commitment to winemaking here. In 2008, under the name Vins del Massís (wines from the massif), he started to produce white wines in an old industrial warehouse. Combining the virtues of local varieties like Xarel·lo and Malvasía, from old vines in Olesa de Bonesvalls, with the body and sweetness of Grenache Blanc from Vilalba dels Arcs in the DO Terra Alta appellation, Benjamín Romeo and his partners, Patxi Fernández Bengoa and Belén Sánchez, quickly managed to produce fragrant and mouth-watering wines with fresh acidity and good volume; wines which have delighted both wine critics and wine-lovers alike.
