The wine

El Valao is Vinos Valtuille’s first vino de finca or estate wine, from a vineyard comprised of vines aged almost a hundred years old. A wine which, at such a reasonable price, enables us to get to know both the bodega’s style of mature wines, as well as the Mencía variety’s profile with its aromas of blackberries and wild soft fruits, and also the character of the Bierzo’s countryside, with its smoky notes and touches of liquorice. An austere, fresh and juicy wine.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker and Suckling

The harmonious 2019 El Valao comes from an ancient plot and fermented in stainless steel and matured in 225-liter oak barrels for six to seven months. The wine is harmonious and combines the house style of ripe and juicy wines (this one is 14.2% alcohol) with very good freshness and balance, coming through as medium-bodied and quite elegant. It's serious and austere, with all that it takes to have a nice development in bottle. And with good freshness and the 2019 tannins, it should be able to stand up to powerful foods. 4,500 bottles produced.

Very attractive berry and cherry character with some clove and slate undertones. It’s medium-bodied with fine tannins and a flavorful finish. Subtle minerality to this. Drink now.

Vinos Valtuille

Vinos Valtuille

Vinos Valtuille is a small, familiar-run winery, with Marcos García Alba one of the new-wave wine-produers and bodega owners in Bierzo, that took on the challenge of creating quality wines at the beginning of 2000, making an important investment in installations, facilities and plenty of technical resources. Marcos launched onto the market under the brand name of Pago de Valdoneje, giving rise to a young, single varietal Mencía wine that has been growing in reputation out there...
