The wine

We often forget that wine is a kind of food whose role is to accompany us at the dining table. Telmo Rodríguez has not forgotten and Corriente is named after and inspired by the commonplace wines which were drunk every day at mealtimes in nineteenth century La Rioja. A traditionally and typical Rioja style, pleasant and easy to drink and very affordable. An honest good quality wine ready to be drunk at any time.

What does this wine taste like?

It displays a Picota cherry red colour with a red tile coloured rim in the glass thanks more to the weak colour of the Grenache variety than the wine’s evolution. On opening the bottle, some vegetal notes are revealed which swiftly integrate into the wine’s fragrances. It is not overly intense, but offers aromas of red fruit, very refreshing touches of black pepper and bay leaves, and a certain alcoholic sensation which supports its somewhat rustic profile. A fresh wine with a good level of acidity, quite dry but also juicy and light-bodied. A very subtle bitter background lingers on at the finish.

Drinking and storing

A wine created to be enjoyed daily. If at first it seems too rustic, open the bottle and leave it to breathe while you prepare the meal. If you do not finish it with your meal, simply put the cork back in and keep it in a cool place for the following day.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker

I love the 2018 Corriente, the entry-level in Rioja (even if they made me taste it after Las Beatas!). It's from a year with lots of rain (600 liters) that created some fungal challenges and a late harvest that started on the 8th of October and went on until the 1st of November! It was produced with grapes from different altitudes and soils around Lanciego and fermented with indigenous yeasts in concrete vats. It matured in barriques and foudres for close to a year. It has a very expressive nose with great purity and definition, marking the character of what the 2018s from the single vineyards are going to be like. 50,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2020.

Compañía de Vinos de Telmo Rodríguez

Telmo Rodríguez and Pablo Eguzkiza started work on their wine project in 1994 with, as they admit, few resources but plenty of ideas. The firm they set up, Compañía de Vinos de Telmo Rodríguez, has grown based on the pair's travels around winemaking regions to understand and experience Spain as a complex and unique winemaking country with incredibly diverse and rich landscapes.   Top quality winemaking traditions, experience in...
