The wine

Ilatraia is a typical Bordeaux blend, but with an unusually large space for Petit Verdot (40%), combined with Cabernet Sauvignon (40%) and Cabernet Franc (20%), which rests half in new and half in used barriques. It is dark ruby red and moves slowly, showing excellent concentration. The nose is dark, compact and penetrating; the notes that make up the heart of the bouquet (blackberry, blueberry, plum, black cherry and cassis) are expressed with precision and intensity.

Ilatraia smells of small black berries ripened under the scorching sun but there is also a fine spice, echoes of leather and tobacco as well as balsamic hints and an intriguing vegetal background. The flavour is rich and complete: warm, tannic and fresh. Well-proportioned, it caresses the palate with its velvety texture, leaving a happy memory that lasts for a long time. A muscular and sensual red, appreciated by critics all over the world.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Suckling

Blackberries and currants with some violet and walnut undertones. Medium-to full-bodied with firm, polished tannins that show balance and focus. Stone and mahogany. Just a hint of chocolate. Racy and fine. 40% petit verdot, 40% cabernet sauvignon and 20% cabernet franc. Drink now or hold.

Brancaia

Young oenologist Barbara Widmer has taken over the reins of a winery from her father Bruno. The winery, bought by the family in 1981 when it was still an abandoned farmhouse, is today among the most consistent and reliable in Chianti, with a clear international inclination, but never at the expense of territoriality and traditional appellations. With highly sustainable viticulture, Barbara's vigour and dynamism equals her love for the territory. Active on particularly...
