The wine

A great concentration of fruit, with the structure and elegance so typical of a good Ribera del Duero, luscious and lengthy, that’s Vizcarra. A genuine Ribera but it also has a special juicy quality which reminds us in its expression of certain Rioja wines; a Tempranillo, when all is said and done. A wine with a captivating nose and real soul, and precisely because of its intensity on the nose, we’re expecting a powerful wine, which it certainly is, but also seamless, silky, very well-balanced, and one to drink and enjoy rather than spend time discussing.

What does this wine taste like?

Perhaps we do need a few details. Black fruit, notes of cinnamon, ginger and toasted biscuits: fresh, smooth, profound and very intense. It is very much a fruit-driven wine and, although not possessing great complexity, it reveals coffee and chocolate notes on the palate, and is slightly sweet, with good acidity, fresh and appealing; a most enjoyable wine that leaves us with a very pleasant taste in the mouth, displaying mineral undertones and a subtle hint of caramel.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker

2018 was a year of freshness and higher yields, and the Vizcarra wines are quite good at reflecting the character of the vintage, as I see in the 2018 JC Vizcarra. It has good ripeness but great balance and freshness, varietal character and soft tannins with a chalky mouthfeel. The oak is neatly integrated into the wine. 60,000 bottles and 2,200 magnums produced. It was bottled in August 2020.

Bodegas Vizcarra

Juan Carlos Vizcarra Ramos is the owner and winemaker of this winery, run by a family with strong wine-growing roots, whose vineyards are spread out over various individual plots of land lying within the Burgos municipalities of Mambrilla de Castrejón and Roa de Duero (namely, La Ambuena, El Oro, Las Arras, Tras de San Pedro, Senda del Oro and the oldest ones: Los Barriles and Carrascal). The grapes, of the Tinta del País variety, undoubtedly enjoy excellent growing conditions...
