Tintore

Tintore is the most characteristic red berry grape of the Amalfi Coast, especially of the small district of Tramonti, so much so that it is also called "tintore di Tramonti". It still grows on over hundred-year-old ungrafted vines in vineyards that, overlooking the sea, benefit from the Mediterranean climate, ventilation and the excellent diurnal ranges of this slice of paradise. It is probably related to the aglianico and the ancient tintora grapes, names that were usually given to vines rich in colour. The vineyards extend up to 700 metres above sea level and the soils are a mixture of tufa, sand, limestone and eruptive residues of Vesuvius, generally of a characteristic reddish colour. Of very limited production, the wine is a beautiful dark ruby red, almost ink-coloured, and on the nose it expresses fragrances of currant, blueberry jam, ripe plum, juniper, pepper, graphite and leather in the most evolved cases. Balsamic also on the palate, it has pungent acidity and a silky but well identifiable tannin. It is ideal for ageing in wood and can also be enjoyed as a rosé.
