Petit Rouge

Petit rouge, in terms of yield and quality, is the most widespread and cultivated native red grape variety in the Aosta Valley. According to some, it originates from Burgundy. It is grown on the orographic right and left of the Dora Baltea up to altitudes of about 750 metres above sea level. In the best sub-areas of the regional DOC it is vinified both as a single variety and in blends with other local or international grapes such as syrah. Perhaps the most convincing expression is that of Torrette Supérieur. It has a beautiful purplish red colour tending towards garnet with evolution and an intense aroma, with notes of dog rose, violet, raspberry, blueberry, bitter almond. With ageing, perhaps in wood, it takes on a slightly less rustic and deeper profile, taming the tannin and slightly vegetal notes typical of the young product.
