The wine

Mengoba was the first Godello from the Bierzo we tasted that really amazed us; it was quite a novelty, an exceptional wine and a great find.

Unlike other Godellos, which are fermented in stainless steel, the Mengoba Godello slowly ferments in 5,000-litre wooden casks, an unusual occurrence that imparts somewhat different nuances from those normally occurring in Godello wines.

Despite its contact with wood, Mengoba is pale in colour, light-textured in the glass and bright. Its aromas are also light and subtle, and the exotic nature of the fruit (pineapple, passion fruit, lychee, peach...) comes over gradually, since the contribution made by the wood and lees noticeably diminishes the explosion of fruit. On the palate it is delicious: the oak is not over-played at all and this is a light-textured wine which reminds us of aniseed, Granny Smith apple peel and pastries, with a fine balance between “citric” acidity and an elegant suggestion of bitterness, which in effect makes Mengoba a splendid wine.

So definitely then, a GREAT find.

The Godello is fermented in 5,000-litre wooden casks and the Doña Blanca in stainless steel. Matured for 6-7 months on its lees.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker

The white 2020 Mengoba Godello Viejo Sobre Lías now comes with a plastic technical stopper à la Ponsot, and it displays a golden color (it had some skin contact) and a serious nose with shy but elegant aromas, subtle and a little backward. The palate is stony and medium-bodied, with good ripeness (13.5% alcohol), deep flavors and a brilliant texture. I like the restraint here. It matured in 4,000-liter oak foudres for 12 months. 2020 feels fresh and very good for whites. 12,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2021.

Bodegas y Viñedos Mengoba

Mengoba is the winery personally run by Gregory Pérez, a real enthusiast within his profession, and today a benchmark in the Bierzo region. Starting out in 1998 at the Château Cos d'Estounel, Gregory learnt the practical art of pruning and wine-growing at the hands of Guy Mallet. In Spain, he formed part of the team at Luna Beberide and was one of the creators of Paixar, one of Bierzo’s best wines. The vineyards of Bodegas Mengoba extend over Espanillo,...
