Wines by Raúl Pérez

Born in Valtuille de Abajo (León) in 1972, Raúl Pérez Pereira has enjoyed a meteoric, though by no means simple, road to success. He took his first steps in the world of wine in the family winery, Castro Ventosa, where he started work at the age of 19. After studying oenology, he took over the firm in 1997 and also went on to learn from great winemakers such as Álvaro Palacios and collaborate with other local wineries like Peique.

Raúl launched the first wine under his own label in 2003. Ultreia is named after the greeting traditionally used in the past by pilgrims following the Saint James pilgrimage which passes through Valtuille on its way to Compostela in northern Spain. From day one, he knew that the Mencia variety was the grape he needed to work with. Following that success, Raúl went on to collaborate with other renowned names from the world of winemaking such as Dirk Niepoort in Portugal and Eben Sadie in South Africa and with a wide range of wineries in Rías Baixas, Ribeira Sacra, Monterrei and Madrid, participating in the creation of over 200 different wines.

Nowadays, his style of wines is easily recognized by wine-lovers. Produced using early harvests of local grapes including stems, and a measured use of wood, the resulting wines are incomparable ones, brimming with energy and personality. Raúl's utmost respect for nature and ecosystems is key to the fact that the features of different soil and climate conditions are expressed clearly in each and every one of his wines. Each vintage is different, and each wine, unique. But all his creations are delightfully flavoursome and ready for drinking at an early age, though they also improve and become magical over time.
