Gran Enemigo Gualtallary Single Vineyard 2013 is a wine of great complexity, made primarily from Cabernet Franc grapes, along with a small percentage of Malbec; both varietals ferment together, in the old Pomerol style. The grapes come from the Gualtallary region, grown in a vineyard planted at an altitude of 1,430 metres, on a chalky soil.
Its colour is intense, purple with a reddish rim. Its aromas are complex, intense and elegant. Complementing the vegetal and spicy notes of the Cabernet Franc are those of the Malbec's ripe black fruit. Time spent in contact with the oak adds restrained touches of vanilla overall. On the palate, the texture is very fine and the acidity amazing. It proves complex, with structured, grainy tannins. The finish and aftertaste emphasise its mineral, almost saline character.
After having achieved such an impressive wine, the 2012 vintage (98+ Parker points), the 2013 wasn't going to be easy, but Bodega Aleanna, far from being intimidated, went one further (100 Parker points). If you want to understand the true potential of this region, with soils akin to Burgundy and Champagne, don't deprive yourself of one of the very few 3,400 bottles of this immense Mendoza red.
The Gran Enemigo El Cepillo Cabernet Franc 2013 (97 Parker points) wine is an excellent example of Alejandro and Adrianna's savoir faire. It is one of their two new single-vineyard Cabernet Franc wines, produced for the first time with the 2012 harvest. The site of the vineyards producing these grapes will soon receive its own official appellation of origin certificate, thanks to the distinctive characteristics and features of the soil there. Located at an altitude of 1450 metres in the Uco Valley in the region of San Carlos, the alluvial soil deposited here by glaciers in the past is made up of pink granite and marine limestone.
If you are lucky enough to open one of the 2,000 bottles of this wine, you'll find a well-defined austere wine. Its intense minerality reminds us of gravel and graphite. It has subtle traces of toasted and spicy oak, together with an excellent juiciness and lively sharpness. Deep and full-bodied on the palate, with aromas of dark fruits and refreshing hints of herbs and tobacco leaves. Thrilling from the first drop to the last, this wine will become even better after spending some time in the bottle.
Gran Enemigo Agrelo Single Vineyard 2013 (96 Parker points), a red of historic character and revolutionary profile, a wine which soaks up tradition and rebels against resistance to change.
Perhaps the best Cabernet Franc made in Argentina, the Gran Enemigo Agrelo doesn't come about from an overwhelming desire to show off the varietal, but to showcase the landscape, a magical location. At an altitude of 980 metres and on originally alluvial soils, a very special microclimate leaves a conclusive mark on the soul of this mature and spicy red, in which the Malbec adds a finishing touch to the Cabernet Franc's merits.
The clay soil, which millions of years ago was covered by a lake, and a harvest spread over four sessions enable the grapes to reach perfect maturity as well as conveying a strong mineral touch to the wine. The altitude ensures freshness and the ageing brings out smoky and spicy aromas. The black fruit and rough tannins end up by rounding off a truly impressive aromatic display and mouthfeel which recall the Bordeaux wines of times past.
The Gran Enemigo Chacayes Single Vineyardis another of the exceptional Cabernet Francs made by the idealists at Bodega Aleanna, using grapes from the stony alluvial soils in the Chacayes area.
The prestigious magazine Wine Advocate awarded it 96 points on the Parker ratings. It has a deep ruby-red colour, an intense freshness, and its aromas of blackcurrants, blueberries, violets, liquorice and minerals delight the nose. In the mouth, it is a well-defined wine with character and body. Energetic and lively, the Chacayes is definitely another stroke of genius from Adrianna Catena and Alejandro Vigil.
