The wine

Mauro is a perfect example of the strength and character of red wines from Castile. Its great potential for laying down, together with its power and elegance, make it an excellent choice for people with their own private wine cellar. An essential wine, and great for keeping, Mauro is one of the key names in the world of Spanish wine.

It was the first wine produced by Mariano García (in charge of the technical running of Bodegas Vega Sicilia for 30 years) when he decided to set up his own personal project, Bodegas Mauro, in 1998. Despite its location, the winery does not come under the classification of the Ribera del Duero appellation due to where the boundaries are drawn around the Tudela del Duero area.

What does this wine taste like?

Mauro is a serious wine. It started out somewhat shy but has created a more floral and aromatic profile with every year that passes. A powerful wine, but also delicate and balanced, with a wonderful combination of depth and complexity. It is a fragrant wine, with magnificent red fruits and freshness, and more length than width.

Grainy tannins add a noteworthy dynamism, alongside a moderate acidity and a natural concentration in the nose where primary aromas can still be appreciated. A gripping wine with a chalky texture and a dry finish.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker

The textbook red 2020 Mauro comes from a cooler year with freshness and balance. It's powerful and ripe with 14.5% alcohol and a medium to full-bodied palate that reveals a juicy and creamy wine with very good balance and drinkability. It was produced with Tinto Fino/Tempranillo and 15% between Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, and it fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and matured in barrels and foudres of different ages for 15 months. This is a very drinkable vintage of Mauro with very good balance and stuffing and, therefore, aging potential in bottle. 300,000 bottles produced and bottled in one single lot in April 2022.

The winery

Bodegas Mauro

Bodegas Mauro is the first family-run winery under Mariano García to lie in Castile-Leon (San Román Bodegas y Viñedos falls within the Toro denomination) and is named in honour of his father, Mauro García. Founded in 1980, two years before the Ribera del Duero D.O. was established, Bodegas Mauro was excluded from the Denomination of Origin for strictly adhered to reasons of geographical delineation at the time it was set up, when historical arguments...
