About this selection...

If you travel from the south of the province of León, through La Seca in Valladolid, and up to the north-west corner of La Rioja, you will see an infinite variety of wonderful landscapes and vineyards, and hear numerous tales of grape harvests, as you get to know a people firmly rooted in these lands. At first glance, wines from León, Valladolid, and La Rioja may seem to be very different from each other but when you listen to the philosophies of their winemakers, a common trait appears: purity.

Our June selection offers you three wines which represent a pleasant surprise from what you would expect by just looking at their labels and origins. Three relatively young winemaking projects which use experience and tradition to bring their ideas to life. Old vines, generational wisdom, soils full of character, and traditional varieties come together in an almost magical formula to make every sip of these wines a pure pleasure.

The vineyards are worked with an utmost respect for nature in a variety of lands with their own particular characteristics. Local yeasts and stems also come into play during the winemaking process. The fruit comes alive, leaving behind a certain excessive maturity which other wines may be guilty of. These wines seduce the drinker with their freshness rather than their body, as the wood becomes a faithful yet modest partner.

Complexity meets simplicity in these easy-flowing moreish wines which pass on the character of stones and clay, of forestland, of rain, sun, and wind. They bring back an almost-forgotten style; that of transparent wines, wines with a spontaneous fresh roundness gifted to them by nature itself.

Young white. Isaac Cantalapiedra Wines without GI, Spain Verdejo

Bottle: 9.66 € club members / 10.95 € non-members

At the family-run winery which the Cantalapiedras own in La Seca, at the heart of the Rueda DO, there's a wealth of expertise gained over several generations. Grandfather Heliodoro planted his first grapevine when he was only 15 years old and passed on all his knowledge to members of his family, down to Isaac, his son, and then to Manuel, his grandson. Isaac and Manuel set up the present-day winery at the end of 2014 and extended their territory to 21 hectares of pebble-covered vineyards.

The ground, the terroir in fact, has been the focus of this family project right from the very first day; concern for the environment and organic and biodynamic practices, non-negotiable mainstays. In parallel, Manuel started up a venture on his own to produce two new natural wines, Mondo and Lirondo, two wines made with a non-intervention approach, a faithful reflection of the land and the age.

Lirondo is an atypical Verdejo, an intense golden colour and a bit cloudy which demonstrates respect for the wine's natural properties. It has an organic aroma, of yeast and straw, not really reflecting the preconceived sensations of the varietal. Its fantastic acidity draws attention to a fine minerality and a very elegant flow through the palate, featuring fresh, balsamic notes of undergrowth, small yellow flowers and delicate aniseed touches. After a little time in the glass, the expected herbaceous hints appear, but always from a pleasant perspective. The fruit is rather more discreet, very far from the excesses accrued by some of the region's whites; closer to citrus fruits or peaches than any strident tropical notes. A cool, rocky undertone accompanies the wine during a round passage, extremely rounded! With a delicate mouthfeel on a background of hay and bakery hints. Lirondo is a Verdejo which charts out a new horizon for the varietal, where the fruit gives a helping hand to the acidity and obligatory bitter notes of this Castilian grape.

Las Jaras 2017 (2 bottles)

Red Crianza. Fuentes del Silencio Castile and León, Spain Prieto Picudo, Mencia, Alicante Bouschet

Bottle: 14.35 € club members / 16.35 € non-members

Las Jaras is produced with fruit from hundred-year-old pre-phylloxera vines which are currently awaiting their official organic cultivation certificate. Located in the Valle del Jamuz valley, in the south of León, the north-facing vines are sheltered by Mount Teleno. They are planted on gentle slopes and thrive in this microclimate. The red iron-rich clay soils are cool and lead to structured and expressive wines while the temperature variations the vines experience give the wine a good degree of freshness.

The grapes are collected by hand and deposited in oak barrels crate by crate, with only a quarter of the harvest being de-stemmed which partly explains the character of the wine. Native yeasts are used in the fermentation with the aim of maintaining the local personality of the resulting wine.

Las Jaras offers a beautiful cherry colour with ruby-red rims, and a nose based around elegant notes of dust. Spicy and juicy in the mouth, with plentiful but measured tannins and an interesting hint of talcum covering a mature and round mouth with tastes of lightly liqueur-like red fruit, purple flowers, scrubland and the dry peel of blood oranges. Pleasant, creamy, and deep at the same time; fresh and seductive, with comforting hints of cocoa and smoke in the background. If drunk young, it pairs well with meat dishes but its round and friendly profile means it also works well with lighter foods.

MQV La Buena Vid 2014 (2 bottles)

Red Crianza. Bodegas Más Que Vinos Rioja, Spain Tempranillo, Graciano

Bottle: 11.85 € club members / 13.50 € non-members

Goblet-trained Tempranillo and Graciano vines planted over 50 years ago are behind the elegance and complexity of this splendid Rioja wine. The vines, planted in Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa, are harvested by hand at the end of September and left to undergo a cold maceration for two or three days. Following their alcoholic fermentation, the malolactic one happens spontaneously in second year oak barrels. Finally, the wine is left to age for 14 months in French and American oak.

Despite this long crianza process, La Buena Vid does not allow wood to dominate its soul. It has a bright Picota cherry colour and clear aromas of wild red berries and cherries. It is only after a few minutes in the glass that light hints of toast appear, but always remain in the background. Fresh and silky in the mouth, elegant and round thanks to the perfect balance between the fruit and its measured ageing. Airy, light, and delicate, the wine is as lively as your first bite of a raspberry. It has fine acidity and citric notes, like a segment of a blood orange, probably thanks to the 20% of Graciano grapes used to produce it. Minerality can be guessed at in the nose, before being confirmed on tasting, when its clay-chalk soil character leaves its mark. The La Buena Vid transmits an exciting feeling of wisdom, of time well-spent; it is hardly surprising that it has delighted demanding experts such as Robert Parker and José Peñín.
