This style of wines can be produced from different grape varieties as long as the work carried out in the vineyard and cellar is planned with the final objective in mind. Options include using lighter-colouring varieties, harvesting the grapes a little earlier, carrying out shorter maceration periods, or altering fermentation temperatures. All of these techniques, and others, can lead to more subtle wines which transmit more clearly to the wine glass the environment of the landscapes they originate in. Our selection of wines for this month fit into this category. We start with the Giuseppe Cortese Nebbiolo, a classic use of the famous Italian Nebbiolo grape variety. Our second wine, the Clos Lentiscus Perill Noir Sumoll, offers excellent results from the, previously criticized, Sumoll grape. Finally, we have the Akilia Villa de San Lorenzo, a fragant and distinguished wine with a very Atlantic interpretation of the Mencia grape variety.

Red. Giuseppe Cortese Langhe, Italy Nebbiolo
Bottle: 11.71 € club members / 15.80 € non-members
The Giuseppe Cortese Nebbiolo is obtained from the younger vines (between 15 and 20 years old) grown in the Rabajà vineyard, which the winery also uses for producing its renowned Barbaresco. In the making of this fine-structured red, there is clear evidence of very high quality grapes, originating from one of the most esteemed parts of the Langhe region, that undergo an ageing period of 12 months in oak barrels of different sizes, from 17 to 25 hectolitres, using new and those aged up to 9 years old.
On the nose we can appreciate aromas of forest fruits and violets, enhanced by touches of rhubarb, liquorice and other milder spices. The fruit quality is first-rate and complemented by considerate usage of oak, which succeeds in establishing a bouquet that's easy, immediate, refined and delightful. Classic in flavour, it appears warm, tannic and persistent on the palate. We can recognise in this Nebbiolo from Giuseppe Cortese a wine of great intensity and delicacy, an excellent accomplishment that brings out the best from this magnificent terroir and its vineyards.

Red Crianza. Clos Lentiscus Penedès, Spain Sumoll
Bottle: 12.18 € club members / 14.35 € non-members
The Perill Noir ('black danger') wine is just what the name says, a dangerous (you can't put it down) and black (as red wines are called in many countries) wine. The Sumoll variety gives it a pale intensity, with aromas of wild red fruits and the salty hints so typical of the Garraf region. Wild, rustic, and surprising, the Perill Noir will seduce anyone who tries it. You can feel the forest, the soil, the acidic fruit as you taste it, and the energetic rustic character of this varietal comes out simply thanks to the gentleness its ageing affords it. Manel Aviñó is right to feel proud of this wine, the result of his perseverance with the almost untameable Sumoll variety. The hills and forests of the Montgròs landscape seem to be trying to hide the Sumoll vines, to prevent people from discovering the great secret Clos Lentiscus has produced — an exciting red wine, produced with precise biodynamic agriculture without the use of chemical interventions in the process. The sea breeze hydrating the vine leaves and the strong sunlight ensuring the necessary temperature differences make the Perill Noir a fresh but intense wine. Hints of redcurrants, grass, red flowers, wild cherries, and fine spices remind us of the Sumoll grapes and oak used during its production.
Maybe we should advise you not to go near this wine, as you won't want to stop once you've sampled it, but the fact is that this 'danger' deserves to be tried by all lovers of personal wines with a strong character.

Red Crianza. Akilia Wines Bierzo, Spain Mencia
Bottle: 10.95 € club members / 12.90 € non-members
Observing a glass of Akilia Villa de San Lorenzo, we see a delicate wine with a fragile ruby colour. Dairy aromas combine with those of red forest fruits, blue flowers, and spices such as pepper or cloves. Its legs and brightness indicate a lively, wide wine which is just how it tastes on the palate, fulsome and wide in flavour but flowing elegantly without becoming heavy. It has aromas of wild cherries, plums, bush scrub, unripe strawberry tree berries, and slate dust. The concrete tanks used during vinification and ageing of the must from the Fontairo (2.5 hectares) plot keeps the fruit intact and provides a touch of austerity to the wine. The grape must from the Villarín (1 hectare) plot is aged in oak barrels, and acquires aromas of liquorice and slightly rough tannins. The careful blending of the two results makes Akilia Villa de San Lorenzo a complex and versatile, yet delicate, red wine.
