About this selection...

There's an unwritten rule that says whenever a vineyard is treated with respect and passion in a beautiful setting, the landscape goes with the wine into the bottle. The mountains, woods, rocks, sea... Nature likes to leave its stamp on the wines, and uncorking a bottle and feeling its essence makes for a magical moment.

The lands of the Mediterranean abound with vineyards and naturally-existing corners of scenic beauty, and there's no doubt some of the most coveted landscapes are hidden away in Italy and Spain. Three of them can be found sealed within the bottles of Cos Nero di Lupo 2015, Foradori Teroldego 2014 and Izadi Selección 2012.

The sands of the Riserva Naturale Orientata Bosco di Santo Pietro in Sicily have a very marked effect upon the character of the Cos Nero di Lupo; its warm climate and the balsamic nature of its pine and eucalyptus forests come through with every sip. Also in Italy, but to the north of the peninsula, there lie the vineyards of Elisabetta Foradori, very close to the Dolomites, in the Trentino - Alto Adige. The environment and the deep affection which Elisabetta has always felt for the ecosystem ensure maximum expression of the Teroldego grape, a red mountain-growing variety held in the highest regard in the Foradori vineyards. Back in Spain, the Cantabrian Mountains protect the Bodegas Izadi vineyards from the cold north winds, allowing the old Tempranillo and Graciano vines to ripen off in a pleasant climate that's half-way between continental and Mediterranean.

If you like the Mediterranean, love Nature or simply enjoy great wines, "Landscape wines" offer you three picture postcards, three liquid photographs of some of the most scenically beautiful spots in southern Europe.

Cos Nero di Lupo 2015 (2 bottles)

Red. Azienda Agricola Cos Sicilia, Italy Nero d'Avola

Bottle: 11.77 € club members / 13.89 € non-members

Sicily, the largest of the Mediterranean islands, is a land of beaches and volcanoes, artists and puppets, but it also boasts an excellent cuisine. Its distance from the Italian mainland has given the island a distinct identity, a very special feeling that can be sensed in both its kitchens and its vineyards.

The Nero d'Avola variety, with its sweet tannins and spicy aromas, is the most widely planted red grape on the island and Azienda Agricola Cos one of its most prestigious producers. Their Nero di Lupo is made from organically-grown grapes, fermented with wild yeasts and aged in concrete tanks, and ends up by displaying a clear-cut profile of this varietal.

In each bottle of Nero di Lupo you'll discover an expressive wine that's in no way strident, revealing a subtle maturity and a seductive nose. The hints of volcanic ash, redcurrants and plums combine with spices such as cloves, giving shape to a nose that's intense yet at the same time delicate. Its entry is very fresh and it has a mature mid-palate, but a precise acidity makes it taut enough. It shows all the gracefulness of a wolf (lupo) although no trace of its aggressiveness, and it's black (nero) like the colour of the fruit. Floral, balsamic and rounded on the finish, it exhibits the typical profundity and delicacy of the Azienda Agricola Cos wines.

  • Optimum serving temperature: Between 16ºC and 18ºC

Foradori Teroldego 2014 (2 bottles)

Red. Elisabetta Foradori Vigneti delle Dolomiti, Italy Teroldego

Bottle: 14.35 € club members / 18.30 € non-members

The Foradori vineyards are located in the Campo Rotaliano, a small plain hidden away amongst steep rocky walls where, depending on the soil composition, several different terroirs can be distinguished. The vines, the result of a massal selection from old vineyards, planted in 12 of those parcels with an alluvial soil, combine to create this wine.

As is well known, Elisabetta Foradori's winery doesn't use chemical products and operates in accordance with biodynamic certification. The huge respect always shown to Nature and a close observation of the vineyards enable the most clear-cut expression of the Teroldego to show through, a mountain variety in whose recuperation Foradori has spent more than 20 years working hard.

The grape must ferments in concrete tanks, often with a small amount of the stalks, and matures for a year in large-volume wooden and concrete containers which allow the fruit's essence to be preserved and concentrate the wine. This can easily be discerned in the depth of its Picota cherry colour and the intensity of its red fruit (redcurrants and cherries). On the palate, minerality and freshness ooze from all sides, combining hints of ash and scrubland blue flowers. Its fruit is rounded, nigh on perfect, generous and juicy. Its finish, with a marked acidity, defines the varietal's profile to perfection.

Izadi Selección 2012 (2 bottles)

Red Reserva. Bodegas Izadi Rioja, Spain Tempranillo, Graciano

Bottle: 10.62 € club members / 12.50 € non-members

The Izadi Selección is one of the Bodegas Izadi gems, resulting from a rigorous selection of the best grapes grown in the old vineyards owned by the winery at the foot of the Cantabrian Mountains, in the triangle formed by Villabuena, Samaniego and Ábalos.

The bush vines date from 1960 and offer fairly low yet extremely good quality yields. The slopes of calcareous-clay soil, covered in pebbles and lying at 520 metres above sea level, ensure perfect ripening; a cohesive viticulture and traditional methods for working the land bring forth grapes of great purity in aromas and flavour.

On the nose the vanilla notes, fine wood and smoky hints are most seductive. Cocoa coats the fresh ripe red fruit. It has a harmonious and savoury palate, with silky tannins; it offers elegance all the way through, from the fine spicy touches to its subtle minerality. Despite the lengthy time spent ageing, the oak doesn't draw attention from the fruit, rather it adds complexity to it. As expressive as it is pleasant, it proves delightful right from its fresh entry to that long finish.

The Izadi Selección is a modern Reserva, with 20% Graciano in the mix, which wisely places it mid-way between the most modern Rioja Alavesa reds and the denomination's classic Reservas. A strong commitment to elegance.
