We've chosen three for you in this month's selection. For the Trepat, we've gone to the heart of its kingdom, Conca de Barberá in Cataluña. Here we invite you to discover one of the producers who best knows and champions it, and one of the finest red wines made from Trepat: Carles Andreu Trepat 2014. For the Pinot Noir we've selected a wine that delivers some of the best results outside the exceptional Burgundy region, where this grape is the irrefutable star; we're suggesting you get to know Vinya des Moré 2009, a Pinot Noir from Mallorca and crafted in artisan fashion by Miquel Gelabert. Lastly, a little gem from the Valtellina, an Italian region on the border with Switzerland, an alpine area, where the Nebbiolo offers some extremely fine wines at very reasonable prices. With no disrespect to its own personality, but to give you an idea of what to expect, it's like a little Barolo: Aldo Rainoldi Sassella 2011.

Young red Crianza. Celler Carles Andreu Conca de Barberà, Spain Trepat
Bottle: 10.85 € club members / 12.95 € non-members
The Carles Andreu Trepat is one of the best. It's not a muscular or powerful wine, nor does it pretend to be. Its objective is to reflect the characteristics of the land of provenance, and provide pleasure to all who drink it. It's made using grapes from vineyards called Les Alzinetes, Les Parades and La Butxaca, which the winery owns and works with pride and dedication in the Conca de Barberá denomination; and aged for six months in second-year French oak barrels.
It's a wine holding few secrets and that's one of its major appeals, as it's an honest wine with moderate alcohol content, pleasant, lively, elegant and very drinkable. Its colour will surprise you, or perhaps not, knowing that this is a grape of pale complexion, but it does appear a fairly intense shade. The aromas on the nose and flavours on the palate are very varietal, with raspberries, strawberries and red currants, notes of fresh pepper and vegetal hints of cypress and laurel, with a very refreshing tangy undertone. No sooner is the bottle uncorked and it emerges very open and generous, yet always in a refined way, and on the palate it's more edgy, although smooth and silky. The peppery notes intensify on the tongue but right the way through it's the same fruit-driven character discerned on the nose that dominates, though with a sweeter, mature touch, of redcurrant jam. Clean and direct, it reveals work honestly executed and the result is excellent; a wine worth getting to know.

Red Crianza. Vins Miquel Gelabert Pla i Llevant, Spain Pinot Noir
Bottle: 16.43 € club members / 19.40 € non-members
Miquel Gelabert is a vine grower who's passionate about his land, a champion of native varieties, because of their singularity and the cultural legacy they convey, yet he also figures among the pioneers in introducing foreign grapes to the island's vineyards. Industrious, he's a man who likes to experiment and surprise consumers with wines full of character. The Pinot Noir also numbers among the thirty-odd varieties he grows and is used to produce this noble wine, Vinya des Morè.
Vinya des Morè is a Mediterranean Pinot Noir, serious and refined like those we find further north. It's also a wine for cellaring, with a tannin presence, a tad dry in the first years, but pleasant, offset well by the juiciness of the fruit, ripe blackberries and plums. It's a wine that will surprise and delight you, leaving an impression, revealing earthy notes, a passage through the mouth that's fresh and uncovers floral and fine oak undertones. A wine to take your time over.

Red. Aldo Rainoldi Valtellina Superiore, Italy Nebbiolo
Bottle: 12.49 € club members / 14.90 € non-members
Even when aware of the pale colouring of Nebbiolo grapes, this wine's orangey hues still come as a surprise, a very evolved tone, suggesting a mature wine. On the nose it appears a little reticent at first, changing shortly afterwards, until it reveals itself completely. It certainly has terrific richness for a wine in this price range! The fruit is red and very ripe, aromas of strawberries and cherries enveloped in a perfume of flowers and menthol notes, with lactic touches, hints of leather, orange peel as well as other very juicy white fruits, possibly pears? It's a really juicy wine and extremely drinkable. Don't underestimate its apparent lightness in body and smoothness, because it has sinew and a good fibrous structure. Very palatable and with well-defined acidity, most inviting, leaving a very elegant feeling of rusticity on the palate, and suggestions of damp earth and herb infusions which remind us of a woodland walk in autumn, mingling with dusty aromas as though we were leafing through an ancient tome, with its pages turning yellow too owing to the passage of time. Pick up your wine glass and peruse all the secrets of this delicious Valtellina contained in the glass.
