As regards Méntrida, we are well aware of the fantastic job that Jiménez-Landi has been doing for many years now to get us acquainted with the excellent Garnachas from the Sierra de Gredos, with wines which reflect the character of each individual town. In this instance we have chosen his most modest wine, Bajondillo 2013, a Garnacha and Syrah coupage with a very intense nose, which we found simply delicious. In the Ribeira Sacra, fascinated by the spectacularly-sited terraces that hold the vineyards in their grasp above the River Sil, the Coca i Fitó brothers and the Galician winemaker Andrea Obenza invite us to discover the magic of these Mencías with a marine profile and we would like to share it with you all: Tolo do Xisto 2013. Finally, in the Sierra de Salamanca, four friends introduce us to the elegant rusticity of the Rufete variety, with a wine full of rose and violet fragrance: Tragaldabas 2013. Three very drinkable and gastronomically sound wines.
We hope that you will enjoy them and stay with us for another year; we shall continue to discover new wines, new regions, new varieties, learning about the great masters too, and the vast experience acquired over the years of those who present us with wonderful fruit in wines made for our pleasure and enjoyment.
Happy New Year!

Young red Crianza. Bodegas Jiménez-Landi Méntrida, Spain Grenache, Syrah
Bottle: 5.45 € club members / 6.20 € non-members
It is very clean in the glass, a gleaming ruby-red colour, and intense and complex aromatically. Modest, but not unsophisticated, this is a great little wine and deserves to be treated as such: try decanting it or opening the bottle to give it time to breathe, and you'll see how generous it becomes. On the nose you'll find a fruit juice mélange, with red fruits... and mango! Aromas like these don't surprise us from a variety such as the Garnacha (75% of its coupage) but we thought the Syrah might have been the source. Not at all. Bajondillo is a Garnacha, both a Mediterranean and a Continental Garnacha, with considerable complexity: woodland herbs, the scent of roses and violets, liquorice, tart strawberry, orange peel and damp undergrowth notes. Seductive; just as we said earlier, an absolute delight.
On the palate, there's an explosion of tart strawberry, and intensity too, with a very good balance between sweetness and acidity which makes for extremely pleasurable and easy drinking. It teams up well with various dishes, however its own company is the one that best suits it. It has a lively feel yet with plenty of body, structure and sinew; the tannins are evident but sweet and fleshy. A wine for drinking with your eyes closed... excellent!

Young red Crianza. Coca i Fitó Ribeira Sacra, Spain Mencia
Bottle: 13.12 € club members / 14.90 € non-members
Fortunately, in recent years, the region's wineries have set out to raise the quality of their wines and have become involved in new projects, with very promising results. One of these is Tolo do Xisto, arising from a joint venture between the winery Coca i Fitó and the Galician winemaker Andrea Obenza, which has given us a label and a name, 'Loco por la pizarra' (Mad about slate), which aims to put into words compassionately the great effort that these vine growers must make to cultivate and harvest these vineyards that almost hang over the River Sil. A veritable passion and love for this land.
We should feel extremely grateful to them, because all we have to do is uncork the bottle and immediately enjoy a lively, vivacious and very fresh wine. Once in the glass it appears bright, a ruby-red colour and of medium density; on the nose it is very fruit-driven, fresh red berry fruits and ripe plums, and it exudes a creamy freshness which makes us think that the palate will be juicy; it is quite complex, with slightly hot spicy notes, floral hints, traces of aromatic plants, damp notes and saline touches. Although this is a pleasant medium-bodied wine, it has a very juicy and powerful entry, it is pleasurably sweet, noticeably fresh (tart strawberry) and especially easy to drink. A wine for drinking and eating ...; its salty notes make it particularly well-suited for teaming up with grilled fish and shell-fish, clams, razor clams, tuna, salmon, sea bass... Just imagining the countless combinations makes our mouths water! Burgundy-style and marine-influenced, a noble and thoroughly likeable Ribeira Sacra Mencía.

Young red Crianza. Mandrágora Vinos de Pueblo Sierra de Salamanca, Spain Rufete, Aragonez
Bottle: 13.99 € club members / 15.90 € non-members
On pouring it into a glass, you'll notice its ruby colour, with rosy hues, of medium or even medium-low density. On the nose, it is refined, feminine and reveals some very spicy notes, scintillating; unusual and most attractive. Open the bottle half an hour beforehand, and it will give you overwhelmingly fruit-driven aromas of strawberries, raspberries, fresh berry fruits and ripe cherries, on a background of pungent spices, as we noticed, and balsamic hints with a medicinal waft, effervescent; with time in the glass it settles down and gives way to notes of undergrowth, damp earth, always enveloped by a penetrating sweet floral fragrance of roses and violets.
On the palate that vibrant, effervescent sensation reappears, a tart acidity which imbues it with a rustic feel but which doesn't mask the overall elegance: fruit-forward, floral, with woodland undertones of juniper berries and earthiness. It is structured, medium-bodied, with some marked but mature tannins and a subtle almost imperceptible bitterness which confirms that balance between rusticity and finesse. Very well defined in all aspects, colour, nose and palate, a wine with lots of personality, direct, light and fluid, very easy to drink, complete and long. Tragaldabas — ideal for getting to know the Rufete variety, the Sierra de Francia and discovering a new horizon.
