Heredad X 2012 (2 bottles)

Young red Crianza. Bodegas Carlos Valero Carignan, Spain Grenache

Bottle: 5.87 € club members / 6.75 € non-members

The Heredad wine range, from Bodegas Carlos Valero, originated to celebrate the twenty years since their first reference was released onto the market and forms the basis of an interesting collection of Garnachas interpreted (and made) by prestigious winemakers; on this occasion by Jorge Navascués, a great expert in Garnachas from Aragón, whose excellent work we have already had the opportunity to admire as the technical director of Pago de Aylés and his family-run venture, Viñedos de Mancuso.

Heredad X delivers flawlessly a balance between the Garnacha’s fruitiness and notes acquired from oak ageing; this is a wine which will delight lovers of wines with subtle traces of vanilla and caramel, yet will also enchant those who look for fruit in all its purity, totally unmasked: those notes gained from its short stay in barrel are very well integrated.

In appearance Heredad X is an attractive wine, exceedingly clean and bright, exhibiting a very lively colour, a shade between darkish Picota cherry and ruby-red. On the nose it is open, expressive, with fruit aromas typical of this variety, exuding cherries, raspberries and woodland berry fruits (blackberries), along with those aforementioned creamy notes from oak ageing, always overpowered by the freshness and intensity of the fruit. Completing its complexity is a balsamic background and some dusty hints which bestow a touch of warmth.

That same balance is confirmed on the palate, as this is a juicy, fruity wine, without any bitterness or cloying sweetness, but silky-smooth and easy to drink; therefore just as much a suitable wine for every day and serving with tapas at informal gatherings, as for pairing up with more elaborate and flavourful dishes. A fine Garnacha from Aragón.

Els Pics 2012 (2 bottles)

Red Crianza. Bodegas Mas Alta Priorat, Spain Grenache, Carignan, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon

Bottle: 11.35 € club members / 12.90 € non-members

What could we possibly expect from this superb Priorat winery on producing a wine like Els Pics, and moderately-priced too, except another great wine. An excellent little wine showing Priorat typicality but, above all, boasting the unmistakable ‘Mas Alta’ hallmark, with that warmth and fruit-driven depth and that refinement, quite capable of delighting every type of palate.

Els Pics is a powerful yet accessible wine, and a complex one since it amasses fine qualities acquired over the whole production process: it is a blend of four grape varieties, fundamentally a Garnacha (60%) and Cariñena (25%), with small amounts of Syrah (10%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (5%); the grapes come from young vineyards, planted in soils of varied composition (calcareous-clay and slate) and with various orientations; half the ageing time takes place in concrete tanks, while the other half occurs in French oak barrels, with just 10% of them new and the rest being one year (15%), two years (46%) and three years old (30%). Diversity and complexity.

The wine gleams brightly in the glass, exhibiting an intense cherry colour. It starts off with primary aromas and the pervading warmth of strawberry tart and oven-baked plums; cloaked in the freshness of a fine minerality, notes of liquorice and gunpowder can be discerned. Its 15 degrees of alcohol seem to disappear as if by magic, once it is poured into the glass. On the palate this wine has a considerable amount of body, density and powerfulness, and the longer it spends in the glass, the balance becomes more perfect between its great acidity, the lovely sweetness and the slight bitterness from aromatic plants (thyme) which persists on the finish. A great Priorat at a great price, complete with the ‘Mas Alta’ hallmark and guarantee.

Las Uvas de la Ira Vino de Pueblo 2012 (2 bottles)

Red Crianza. Daniel Landi Viticultor Méntrida, Spain Grenache

Bottle: 15.75 € club members / 17.25 € non-members

If you were thinking this wine would enable you to become familiar with the fascinating, pure mountain Garnachas, El Reventón and Cantos del Diablo, and save yourself a bit of money, then you would be mistaken. Naturally not about the wine, but the whole idea: the three are so different, in soil, in vineyard orientation…definitely in character, that each wine should be considered individually. You may start with these Uvas de la Ira, but if you really want to appreciate the diversity and richness of Garnachas from the Sierra de Gredos mountains, make sure you try the others too. This particular wine will acquaint you with Garnacha from the town of El Real de San Vicente.

El Real de San Vicente town is situated on the eastern side of the Sierra de Gredos (in the province of Toledo), in the River Tiétar basin, an area with a damp Mediterranean climate. The vines used to produce this wine are around 60 years old and located in three parcels lying at an altitude of 750 metres, well below the highest parcel, a plot known as Cantos del Diablo (900 metres), from which Dani Landi makes his wine of the same name. The soils of these three parcels are composed of granite, with sand on the surface, therefore differing from the soil that nourishes another great wine from Dani, El Reventón, with its slate. These differences in soil, climate and altitude are reflected in each of these wines and constitute their essence. What singles out this vine grower and winemaker, an admirer of Burgundy and the Loire Valley, is his respect for nature, his search for identity, to reflect in each individual wine the characteristics of each individual vineyard or, in this instance, of a town, namely El Real de San Vicente.

In line with that objective, Las Uvas de la Ira is made just like their other wines, with maximum avoidance of any aggressive procedure, therefore undergoing gentle but long macerations, with 100% stalks, utilising indigenous yeasts and large volume containers for ageing: the wine is matured for 10 months in 2000 or 3000-litre large French oak casks. And the result? A dark Picota cherry-coloured wine of low density with an abundance of tears yet without any tinging of the glass; an elegant nose, serious and profound, fresh and very fruit-driven, with spicy hints of pepper, mineral and faintly balsamic; superb acidity on the palate, with less fruit intensity than on the nose, medium weight in structure and body - in fact, a tremendously easy to drink Garnacha.
