Red Crianza. Bodega Catena Zapata Mendoza, Argentina Cabernet Sauvignon
Bottle: 10.74 € club members / 12.95 € non-members
The Catena Cabernet Sauvignon is a red with plenty of fruit and evidence of oak which will delight lovers of modern-style wines, yet will also captivate with its sweetness, fruitiness and roundedness those who usually shun the powerful and concentrated type of wine; it is extremely well-made and exudes high quality.
A dark and intense Picota cherry colour, this is a lively and energetic wine that shows its varietal character with that first impact on the nose: lots of ripe fruit (blackcurrants and red fruit), fresh and mineral (eucalyptus, pencil lead) notes, smoky and woody (cedar) hints, and a very attractive creamy sweetness; this is an open, elegant wine that pleases right from the start.
It is very juicy on the palate; powerful but also accessible; concentrated and smooth at the same time, with more black fruit than on the nose (blackberries), and with very well-integrated ageing notes; a wine that is complete. On the aftertaste, a fine bitterness begins to appear but is offset by the concentration of fruit and that ever-present sweetness. A Cabernet Sauvignon with a firm structure that will enable it to evolve extremely well in bottle, as befits this variety, yet with such roundness and balance that it could be enjoyed whilst still young, all down to the expert hands of this wine-producing family which can look back on the experience and passion of four generations.

Red Crianza. Celler Masia Can Tutusaus Penedès, Spain Cabernet Sauvignon

In appearance, Bonesvalls is bright and a dark Picota cherry colour with a rather earthy shade on the rim. On the nose, it has two sides to it but it should be decanted have an hour beforehand in order to discover them both: it exhibits a mineral, smoky character, Bordeaux style (flint, incense, aromatic dried herbs such as thyme) but it abounds in the glass with Mediterranean essence, with juicy aromas of ripe and fleshy-red (plums) fruit and a saline touch, which must surely be due to that sea breeze which daily flows through the vineyards. The combination of aromas is very elegant, attractive and 'feminine', a particularly notable feature for a single varietal Cabernet, a variety which we generally associate with having more of a masculine character.
On the palate it is a light, medium-bodied wine and dominated, more than on the nose, by a Bordeaux profile, with dry touches of nutmeg and cigar box. Overall it is fruity, pleasant, with a fine structure and good acidity, and the tannins are silky, allowing the wine to be enjoyed whilst still young. A liquorice background concludes the aftertaste, with its remarkable persistence.
A wine that pairs up perfectly with Mediterranean cuisine, with roast meats and stews cooked with herbs and typical spices.

Red Crianza. Bodegas Sierra Salinas Alicante, Spain Mourvèdre, Cabernet Sauvignon, Alicante Bouschet, Petit Verdot

Mira is a particularly well-balanced wine, rounded and very fruit-driven. It has a character we would not immediately associate with Monastrell, or at least not at first, embellished as it is by blending; a clever ensemble. The fruit is very fresh: blackberries and ripe plums, seemingly still covered in early morning frost, crisp fruit coated in mineral freshness, with notes of earth and stone, sweet touches and balsamic (liquorice, eucalyptus) hints. A profound red with character.
It is a wine full of colour, with remarkable density and slowly falling tears (15% alcohol! Yet very well integrated!). On the nose… you have to wait a bit and we recommend decanting for at least half an hour. Gradually but decisively, all its nuances start to appear, interwoven in the blend.
Nicely fresh too on the palate, it is fruity, intense, juicy, with good acidity and structure. Unlike perceptions on the nose, the palate reveals a very subtle sweetness and the aftertaste is when the Monastrell reasserts itself; considerately. A harmonious wine, a lovely creation devised by good teamwork.
