Castillo de Perelada Finca La Garriga 2007 (2 bottles)

Red Crianza. Perelada Empordà, Spain Carignan

Bottle: 12.58 € club members / 13.50 € non-members

Finca La Garriga is one of the three great wines, together with Finca Malaveïna and Finca Espolla, from the Castillo de Perelada estate, made 100% from the indigenous variety Samsó (or Cariñena), originating from vines aged more than fifty years old.

Its marked varietal personality, its minerality (especially on the nose) and its freshness mean that, when tasted blind, it can easily be mistaken for a Priorat, although one of the smoother Priorats. The ease with which a wine of this maturity, intensity and complexity can be drunk is astonishing; overall, it is a tremendously fresh, palatable and powerful wine, with aromas seemingly fighting each other to be released from the glass.

It has an intense colour and there is evidence of evolution starting to appear on the rim, which can be picked up and confirmed both on the nose and palate, but the maturity is delicious, intense and elegant; this wine is now at its finest moment. It regales us with ripe fruit aromas, of sweet fruit, rich tertiary notes (mushrooms, earth) and a gentle menthol freshness; a complex wine.

Captivated by that explosion of aromas, it succeeds in seducing us on the palate: a juicy, intense, dense but dry entry, with hints of orange peel... provide confirmation of a serious, elegant wine. Although not offering on the palate the same complexity as on the nose, the fruit is chewy (strawberry and red fruit in particular), it is fleshy, and offers a warm ensemble, with great intensity, spicy notes on a lightly mineral background and subtle ageing notes (for those accustomed to French oak, we need to point out that this wine is aged in American oak barrels!). All the way through the tasting, it gives the impression of containing a restrained powerfulness, enabling us to enjoy every sip, without ever growing tired of it, right to the end.

A fine wine which we would recommend having a bottle of always on hand in the cellar, for opening on any occasion.

Les Cousins L'Inconscient 2011 (2 bottles)

Red Crianza. Les Cousins Marc & Adrià Priorat, Spain Carignan, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah

Bottle: 8.72 € club members / 9.95 € non-members

Discovering the exceptional nature of Priorat's terroir without having to pay a high price for each bottle is becoming easier by the day thanks to initiatives like the one (luckily, not the only one) offered us by Marc and Adriá Pérez. Especially with their wine L'Inconscient, a wine which, straightforwardly and without renouncing either complexity or refinement, enables us to enjoy that “other”, more accessible and above all affordable, Priorat.

The Pérez family are an undeniable benchmark in this highly regarded denomination (Mas Martinet, Cims de Porrera), and Marc and Adriá vinify the wines of this most individual project in the emblematic winery of Cims de Porrera; making quite a personal statement, complete with a striking label, both original and artistic, which will no doubt succeed in attracting younger consumers.

L'Inconscient is a fresh, lively wine, but serious, complex and profound as well. The Cariñena grape, which makes up 30% of the wine's coupage, appears rather shy in the glass; the first impression is of a compact nose, somewhat closed, but in due course it does reveal its merits (we recommend opening the bottle at least half an hour before drinking). Once opened up, it begins to release aromas of great elegance, from fruits gathered in the forest (wild fruits, spicy notes) to velvety aromas (rose fragrance). It seems as though the wine is suddenly waking up after a long sleep.

There is a similar reaction on the palate. It starts off tasting a little dry, but in time, it also exhibits both a slight sweetness and strawberry flavours. The fruit is good quality, handled well (short macerations), and the wine is very easy to drink, clean, honest, with a creamy feel but light touch, with mineral and earthy notes, a smooth structure and well-integrated, refreshing acidity.

One to thoroughly enjoy.

Cap Negre Tinto 2009 (2 bottles)

Red Crianza. Cap Negre ELIMINAR, France Carignan, Grenache, Syrah

Bottle: 10.51 € club members / 15.65 € non-members

The Cap Negre red is a lovely wine, naturally authentic (made using the minimum of treatments and showing great respect for the vineyard and environment) and a fine reflection of the terroir and the grapes that gave it life: Cariñena (50%), Garnacha (35%) and Syrah (15%) grapes, planted on calcareous granite soils in an extremely peaceful region, although periodically shaken by the Tramontana wind. Lovely, and intense.

In the glass it displays a pretty Picota cherry colour with a purplish rim, clean and glyceric, and the first impressions are of a gentle perfume and velvety texture.

It exhibits on the nose aromas of ripe but still fresh (soft) fruit, of strawberries and blackberries, menthol notes, some subtle lactic notes and fine spices (mild liquorice) that highlight its freshness. This is a wine with a refined nose, without lacking any intensity, a pleasant and balanced blend.

With aeration in the glass, its volume increases and earthy, mineral and also orange peel notes appear; it exudes warmth and we are led to expect a wine with body and oily on the palate. So it is: juicy fruit fills the mouth; it is a generous wine, and offers good intensity, balance and some velvety tannins, with a touch of astringency on the finish. This wine will retain its liveliness for some time yet, but we cannot deny that it is at a magnificent point in time, fruit-forward and rounded.

On tasting, we relish its fruitiness and fineness, and it comes over well on the finish, good persistence, always maintaining that fruit-forwardness from start to finish, concluding through the retronasal passage with some Provencal herb notes and light smoky hints.

If there are wines for moments of calm and relaxation, while listening to music or reading a book, this would be one of them. The last drop left in the glass is pure fruit and leaves us with a wonderful taste in the mouth.
