Young red. Bodega Contador Rioja, Spain Tempranillo
Bottle: 10.44 € club members / 11.85 € non-members
A Mi Manera is his carbonic maceration red, a wine flawless in the making, using the best grapes, full of fruit aromas, intense and juicy, elegant... a wine to fall in love with (and we're not just saying that because of the label). It has a lovely colour, as though there were rose petals floating in the glass, lively, an intense cherry colour with a carmine rim.
It is fruit poured into a glass - chewy, juicy fruit, but with a balance that is exceedingly fine (“Fine work”, says the label, and we totally agree); intense, dense but velvety, attractive, a wine where complexity is not sought after, but offering the most genuine fruit expression. A wine which, even though it is young, we shouldn't expect to be simple; exactly the opposite, this wine is complete, with some shy lactic notes found in the aftertaste. It is simply Benjamín ‘in his own way’, and what a way that is!
(A Mi Manera is made with grapes originating from vine-stock planted in parcels with poor soils, mainly calcareous clay, and vinified in large truncated conical vats, with a 10,000 litre capacity.)

Red Crianza. Bodegas y Viñedos Puente del Ea Rioja, Spain Tempranillo
Bottle: 8.72 € club members / 9.90 € non-members
Its colour is intense, befitting that fruit intensity resulting from lengthy pumping over, and its instantaneous aromas are of fresh fruit, accompanied by spicy notes, sweet touches and a very interesting rustic freshness. It is elegant, fruit-forward and lively, and the meatiness that we are soon to encounter on the palate is already there on the nose; the wine has lots of appeal.
Puente del Ea has a smooth entry and is medium-bodied, which makes it an easy, approachable wine. It exhibits a hint of sweetness, well-integrated acidity, smooth tannins and some delicate notes of Provençal herbs, of black pepper and a trace of chocolate; a fresh texture with a warm background that invitingly prompts another glass.

Red Reserva. Bodegas Olarra Rioja, Spain Tempranillo, Mazuelo, Grenache
Bottle: 8.76 € club members / 9.95 € non-members
Cerro Añón Reserva is a dark Picota cherry colour, of medium density and bright, with a rim showing the first signs of evolution; on the nose it exhibits some primary leather aromas, woodland and mushroom notes, which start opening up, gradually but obviously, until its fruit intensity is totally revealed, particularly the red fruit aromas, accompanied by very fresh and elegant balsamic notes. It has an interesting aromatic personality, no doubt resulting from the traditional coupage: Tempranillo (80%), Mazuelo (15%) and Garnacha (5%).
It continues most appealing on the palate, as this is a wine designed to give real pleasure, with a lot of volume, ripe fruit, peppery hints, just the right acidity and smooth, well-integrated tannins, wholly balanced and persisting right to the finish. A good wine at a good price.
