Sameirás Tinto 2010 (2 bottles)

Young red. Adega Antonio Cajide Gulín Ribeiro, Spain Caiño Tinto, Brancellao, Sousón, Mencia

Bottle: 8.03 € club members / 9.10 € non-members

Antonio Cajide Gulín is the son of Ribeiro vine growers and, after having had various other jobs, he returned to the family line of business to embark upon a pure and simple version of viticulture, and to repudiate the poor image of the Ribeiro Denomination of Origin, due to the industrial quantities being produced by Galician cooperatives.

Back in the year 1999, Antonio decided to set up his own winery and restore old vines, grafting long-forgotten traditional varieties. He had just 6 hectares of vineyards, planted in soils with plenty of slate, quartz and pebbles at altitudes of between 100 to 300 metres, but with a significant level of humidity. The philosophy adopted has been to allow viticulture a free rein, applying products only when complications set in.

Sameirás Tinto is Antonio Cajide's pride and joy. An amazing blend of indigenous varieties that includes Mencia, Caiño Tinta, Brancellao and Sousón, creating a powerful wine that looks like a Burgundy due to its paler colour. Its 12% alcohol content could be misleading, as the fruit concentration has a huge hit, however normal it may appear; fresh, balsamic aromas are gently spiced with subtle notes of cloves and pepper...all in all, perfectly balanced and elegant.

Antonio Cajide – the Ribeiro's enfant terrible.

Ponte da Boga Mencía 2010 (2 bottles)

Young red. Adega Ponte da Boga Ribeira Sacra, Spain Mencia

Bottle: 10.65 € club members / 12.10 € non-members

Within the boundaries of lovely Castro Caldelas, where the vineyards follow the path of the River Sil, nestles the Ponte da Boga winery, boasting around 20 hectares of vineyards located in different sub-regions of the Ribira Sacra. Its secret lies with the willing contributions of the small-scale vine growers who are sub-contracted annually to supply their healthy, quality grapes. The countryside provides a beautiful landscape, with small plots perched on the sheer, stony terraces.

Dominique Roujou, the expert French oenologist, is the corner stone in this wine-growing project taken to the extreme, with harvesting causing particular difficulties on the steep slopes. Yet his wines manage to reflect to perfection this heroic environment.

Ponte da Boga Mencía harks back to the olden days, recalling how Mencia wines used to be made locally before they gradually disappeared with the tide of change. This is the bodega's entry level wine and, untouched by oak (just aged in stainless steel), it displays a large sprinkling of minerality: graphite and granite, under the lightest, most agreeable greeny-balsamic touch that adds a good measure of freshness to the wine. There follows the unleashing of a host of violets and hints of earthy undergrowth. Vertical, linear and with perfect acidity is the only way to describe the effect on the palate.

A tribute to Dominique's heroic efforts!

Algueira Mencía 2010 (2 bottles)

Young red. Adega Algueira Ribeira Sacra, Spain Mencia

Bottle: 7.04 € club members / 8.00 € non-members

Founded in 1996 and lying in the municipal district of Doade, Adega Algueira is run by wine-maker and owner, Fernando González. The white grape vines, Albariño, Treixadura, Godello and Loureiro, are dotted about over the near-vertical, steep terraces along the length of the River Sil and enjoy a marked Atlantic microclimate; whilst the red ones, Mencía, Sousón, Caiño and Merenzao, grow on the slopes opposite, shielded from the cold by a Mediterranean microclimate. All these vines lie on rocky ground covered with slaty schist.

On the oenology side, Fernando relies upon the support and advice of Raúl Pérez, and his wines have received good reviews from Robert Parker, who has awarded them excellent scores for a number of years.

Algueira Mencia is the company's little gem; a strong wine, pure in nature, with an amazing intensity of colour, so characteristic of a quality Mencia. A subtle reduced note is apparent which is perfectly acceptable and bodes well for the evolution of this lovely young wine. A good swirl of the glass releases a wonderful array of aromas, topped by strawberries and blackberries.

Plenty of punch here from the Ribeira Sacra.
