Albada Tinto 2008 (2 bottles)

Young red Crianza. Bodega Virgen de la Sierra Calatayud, Spain Grenache

Bottle: 4.96 € club members / 5.65 € non-members

Bodega Virgen de la Sierra is situated at the foot of the Sierra de la Virgen mountain range, in the Ribota river valley. It is D.O Calatayud’s oldest winery and grew out of the dream and efforts of the whole community which decided to stop producing wine in their own family bodegas, having conceived the idea of creating one big communal project; almost 60 years further on and this cooperative venture has gone from strength to strength.

The vineyards are located in Villarroya de la Sierra, planted with bush vines on stony-rocky ground, at an altitude of between 750 and 1,100 metres, and lying in an area of low rainfall.

Albada 2008, when considering its ability to delight the senses, shows the organoleptic characteristics of a pure, exquisite Aragonese Garnacha yet at an unbeatable price. This wine fulfils all expectations: burgundy-red in colour with brick-red glints, displaying subtle tiny fruit aromas of raspberries followed by a certain moistness (damp wood), with lactic notes and hints of leather too. Coming through on the palate is a distinct acidity typical of this variety. Definitely an Atlantic-influenced wine, with fresh, citric-sharp tannins prevailing.

One well-placed to help in these hard times: Albada.

  • Alcohol content: 14,0%
  • Optimum serving temperature: Between 15ºC and 16ºC
  • Drink now or keep until 2012.

Atteca 2009 (2 bottles)

Young red Crianza. Bodegas Ateca Calatayud, Spain Grenache

Bottle: 10.78 € club members / 12.26 € non-members

Bodegas Ateca was founded in 2005 in the village of Ateca, located in Zaragoza province about 14 kilometres outside Calatayud. The winery is part of the Oro Wines project, set up by businessman Jorge Ordóñez, basically for the purpose of producing quality wines in different regions of Spain that are destined for the United States market. In line with other wineries belonging to the group, Ateca enjoys the services of an Antipodean oenologist, Australian Sarah Morris, who expertly handles tastes in New World wines and the developing tastes required by expanding markets.

Ateca owns 55 ha of old vineyards planted on slate soils on the nearby hillsides, with Garnacha being the predominant variety. Atteca 2009 is a fine example of the Garnacha grape grown on Aragonese soil: an excellent concentration of red fruit (raspberry) on the palate and a whiff of oiliness on the nose brought out by the slight greasiness of cocoa and the creaminess of fresh vanilla.

This wine’s palate is fruit-filled ecstasy, lusciously rich and rounded. Just a few seconds in the mouth is all it takes to appreciate this wondrous experience: an excellent freshness along with touches of graphite minerality.

Atteca - a right royal Garnacha!

  • Alcohol content: 14,5%
  • Optimum serving temperature: Between 14ºC and 15ºC
  • Drink now or keep until 2016.

La Guinardera 2006 (2 bottles)

Red Crianza. Celler Balaguer i Cabré Priorat, Spain Grenache

Bottle: 13.49 € club members / 15.35 € non-members

La Guinardera 2006 is the product of just 2 hectares of the estate bearing the same name, situated in Gratallops, Priorat. It is currently the bodega’s only wine and produced from 100% Garnacha grapes, the variety most readily identified with the Priorat and perfect for imparting the llicorella slate terroir.

La Guinardera 2006 has a truly amazing nose: coming over quite definitely in the foreground are wonderful wafts of peaches and dried apricots, which typically occur in botrytized white wines, followed by notes of violet, thyme and liquorice. Such an aromatic concoction, on a blind tasting, could throw us into complete confusion, deceiving us into thinking that this was a white wine. It simply brims with acidity and minerality on the palate: if we close our eyes, the sensations we feel are the same as when tasting a late harvest Tokaji Furmint.

A remarkable Garnacha: La Guinardera.

  • Alcohol content: 14,5%
  • Optimum serving temperature: 15ºC
  • Drink now or keep until 2014.
