Formiga de Vellut 2008 (2 bottles)

Young red Crianza. Domini de la Cartoixa Priorat, Spain Grenache, Carignan, Syrah

Bottle: 9.99 € club members / 11.39 € non-members

Formiga’s first impressions on the nose remind us of wines undergoing carbonic maceration, when notions of cherries and strawberry candy come to the fore; a good swirl of the glass will allow the aromas to develop so that aniseed and figs appear. Somewhat unusually, Formiga releases the smell of black pepper and stalks, very much in common with certain wines from the Côtes du Rhône.

The bouche is flavoursome and concentrated, with an appreciable amount of excellent maturity coming over perfectly well; just the right level of maturity, Atlantic-textured (subtle and smooth) expressing elegance and freshness. Formiga is a wine that gently soothes the palate!

Aged for 8 months in French and American oak barrels.

Martinet Bru 2007 (2 bottles)

Red Crianza. Mas Martinet Viticultors Priorat, Spain Grenache, Syrah

Bottle: 15.19 € club members / 17.90 € non-members

Josep Lluis Pérez is one of the most respected men in the Priorat and his daughter Sara, who now runs the family business, is a committed oenologist who, along with other oenologists of her generation, is revolutionizing the region for a second time by choosing to go for indigenous grape varieties and ecological viticulture. The father-daughter team is working jointly over Martinet Bru, as Josep Lluis takes care of vine-growing on the estate and Sara looks after the wine-making process and the blending. The results are there to be seen. Absolutely splendid!

Martinet Bru comes from a single estate, Mas Torrent, adjoining the Montsant DO. The weather conditions for this plot of land are similar to those occurring in the neighbouring denomination, but the soil is of light, stony slate. Another point, and rather unusual, is the 80’s style retro label adorning this vintage. Is it nostalgia for the past? Martinet Bru is, just as it stands, the Mas Martinet entry-level wine, and the epitome of wine from this district.

The presence of Garnacha is significant in the wine’s style, as it adds powerful black fruit (ultra-ripe blackberries and plums) and a mineral element. There are noticeable touches of liquorice stems and caramelization. The palate appears dominated by the potency (a full-fruit attack), and bitter hints of black cocoa and cinders come through. This is a wine with a lot of spirit and backbone that needs to be decanted beforehand to ease away the overly-alcoholic notes and vegetal-induced astringency that depict the true nature of the Priorat to perfection. Martinet Bru is a truly great, first level wine.

NOTE about the wine-making process: The must was fermented in wooden tanks separated from the grape skins (part of the time), with light, short soakings of the pressed grape skins all the way through alcoholic fermentation so as to extract only the softest, finest tannins and leave behind the harshest in the skins. Aged for 18 months in 4,000 litre vats (66%) and in 300 litre French oak barrels used for 2, 3 and 4 wines. The 2007 vintage has not been clarified nor filtered.

Matured over 22 months in new French oak barrels (30%), one fill (40%) and two fills (30%).
