The wine

This is a single vineyard wine directly descended from RunRig and intricately linked. David Powell planted cuttings from very old RunRig vines in 1994 and went on to create the Barossa Valley's first and highly successful Syrah and Viognier co-fermented wine. The Viognier (8%) used here had already been pressed lightly for RunRig, and the Syrah (92%) was then crushed on top. The blend developed and matured for 18 months in French oak barrels that were previously used for ageing RunRig wines.

A vibrant, deeply dark purple colour, it boasts a richly expressive nose, displaying vividly aromas of dark fruits along with tarry nuances and underlying floral hints. Full-bodied and wonderfully concentrated on the palate, it reveals a velvety structure with silky-smooth tannins, enhanced by the jasmine and apricot aromatic edge from the Viognier. Sensationally lush and long-lasting, it has years ahead in the cellar for those preferring to wait.

Torbreck

The Torbreck winery was founded in 1994 by David Powell, the owner and principal winemaker, and a lover of French Rhône wines and old Syrah (Shiraz in Australia) vineyards, who deserves to be recognised for having promoted Australian wines, especially those from the Barossa Valley, to a position of high prestige on the international stage. Despite there being no previous vine-growing experience in his family, David left his economics studies to dedicate all his time and energy...
