When Priorat is mentioned, Gratallops and Porrera may well spring to mind or Scala Dei from a cultural standpoint. Yet right in the heart of Priorat is the almost unheard of village of Torroja del Priorat where some truly great wines are produced. One of its best known names is Rotllan Torra, with their top-class wine Tirant. Carefully blended from indigenous grape varieties Cariñena and Garnacha, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, it can seem to resemble a Bordeaux or Australian wine in some aspects, but then firmly finds its feet on Priorat home soil.
Great, powerful and requiring some taming, it should be decanted about 2 hours prior to serving, or even better, allowed a few more years of cellaring.
Robert Parker awarded this wine with 91+. Since the 2001 vintage, top ratings of around 95 points have been achieved each year, suggesting this “plus” rating for 2004 could have gone even higher. Here's a great chance to make your own mind up.
