The wine

This special, single variety, single vineyard wine is made from 100% Tempranillo Peludo grapes (hairy on the underside of the leaf), native to the Rioja Sonsierra district but nearly extinct due to low production generally. The Finca La Canoca vineyard is ideally sited for producing high quality fruit, enjoying an Atlantic climate with some continental influences and calcareous-clay soils. The vines are planted densely on trellises and treated with organic fertilizers. Only fully-ripe, healthy clusters are hand-picked at harvest, while on the sorting table a double selection procedure then ensures just the choicest berries pass through. Considerable attention is paid to pumping over during fermentation, occurring twice daily, and when undergoing maceration on the skins. Malolactic fermentation takes place in French oak barrels, followed by ageing for 20 months in new French Bordelaise (90%) and American (10%) oak barrels. Bottled in July 2008, the wine was allowed to rest for a year before release. This is an elegant, flavoursome wine with an excellent structure; powerful, rounded and well-balanced.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker, Jancis Robinson, and Suckling

2018 was a cooler year with rain during the harvest that made the grapes larger, and the 2018 San Vicente shows more fluid, a little lighter and with more polished tannins, a little more austere and less exuberant than the 2019 I tasted next to it. The wines reflect the natural conditions of the year, as the vinification (destemmed in oak vats) and élevage (20 months in new barrels) were the same. 40,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2020.

Smoky and leathery nose. Ripe palate, with quite chunky youthful tannins – dense and ripe with a sweet-leather note and excellent texture. Young and has good fruit concentration and intensity. Layered and long.

Fresh raspberries, blueberries, violets, stones, tar and rosemary on the nose. Some licorice and cloves. Full-bodied with supple tannins and fresh acidity. Lovely, velvety texture. Creamy finish. Tempranillo. Drink from 2022.

Señorío de San Vicente

Señorío de San Vicente

The Eguren family has always shown great respect for its land and with the Señorío de San Vicente estate its aim has been to revive an almost extinct indigenous variety: the Tempranillo Peludo (literally 'Hairy', referring to the underside of the leaf). Señorío de San Vicente is, effectively, a project founded on the idea of producing a single wine, originating from a single vineyard (Finca La Canoca, an 18 ha site) and made from a single variety. The winery is located in San...
