Ester Nin has released her new wine: Planetes. A coupage of Garnacha (70%) and Cariñena originating from the estate of the same name, which has vineyards that are still fairly young (12 years old at present). Moreover, Planetes de Nin is Porrera's first 'Vi de Vila' (literally, 'Town Wine'); in the style of the French Crus, the DOQ Priorat introduced new legislation (2009) that recognises and protects the region's different climatic areas, with the aim of highlighting their own individual characteristics, including vinicultural, soil and climate. In the case of Porrera, the area is particularly cool with no over-ripening; a Planetes only has to be opened for this to be confirmed and to enjoy its sincerity; this is a genuine terroir wine, a truthful expression of the Priorat's historic grape varieties: the Garnacha and the Cariñena.
Despite the youthfulness of the vines, the exceptional characteristics of the area and the terrain, and also the care that both Ester and Carles devote to their cultivation and to every wine-making process (certified organic agriculture and biodynamic farming methods), allow us to enjoy - yet again with this 'new arrival' - the finesse, elegance and great complexity which we have grown used to from this winery. More easily affordable, but on the same lines as the truly excellent Nit de Nin. If you can get hold of a few bottles, then don't think twice.
(In production, the Garnacha ferments and ages for 14 months in 3,000 litre French oak vats; the Cariñena ages in semi-new French oak barrels (2, 3 and 4 years old) with a capacity of 600, 300 or 225 litres.
