The wine

Bierzo or Burgundy? The question we ask ourselves on uncorking and then pouring out the first glass. Definitely Bierzo, but a special Bierzo at that. An undoubtedly fragrant wine, high quality, extremely pleasant, boasting what very few other wines can compete with in this price range. The sensation of smoothness is the feature that best defines the palate… and its name: Pétalos (Petals).

What does this wine taste like?

Broadly speaking, Pétalos is a wine with an Atlantic character and predominantly acidic fruit - a common occurrence in this region with so few hours of sunshine. Nevertheless, it is a lovely sweet-touched wine, with a dash of sugary lusciousness. Pétalos is along the lines of the great Moncerbal, crystalline and fluid, and offers suggestions of concentrated fruit, not overly ripe (the yields of these vineyards are extremely low), mineral traces, graphite notes, hummus and a balsamic background which gains in intensity with time in the glass; smoky notes too, wild flowers (violets, rockrose blossom), fresh wafts ... which add to its aromatic complexity and define its profile, as a perfumed and seductive wine. On the palate its great acidity contrasts with a very pleasant velvety feel. The wine is powerful, intense, oily, with hints of aromatic plants which confer on it a subtly bitter undertone.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker, Jancis Robinson, and Suckling

2021 is clearly the finest vintage of the trio of 2020, 2021 and 2022, and the bottled 2021 Pétalos delivers what the unbottled samples promised: a wine with lower alcohol than ever (13.5%), lighter, a little narrower but with the juiciness of Mencía that seems to come back after some time in bottle. It has lots of notes of aromatic herbs, with some similar aromas to the La Faraona. It's quite expressive and showy, very pleasant and easy to drink, very gourmand, with a velvety mouthfeel and very fine tannins. 320,000 bottles and 2,567 magnums produced. It was bottled between November 2022 and March 2023. Approachable now, very hedonistic.

Cocoa nib and youthful cedar oak notes, a touch of spice and fresh fig. Focused and tight core of red and dark fruits. Subtle brioche and bready notes with a smoky granitic undertone. Really appealing.

Dark cherries, plums, dried herbs and stones on the nose. Full-bodied with fine-grained tannins. Rich, layered, and textured with minerality and balance. Supple finish. Drink or hold.

Vineyards

Pétalos is made using grapes from very old vines, planted at very high altitudes, in the Corullón district, where the soils are primarily slate, in contrast to the majority in the area which are naturally clay. It therefore starts off with certain specific conditions already in place, despite being thought of, as occurs with Burgundy, as a regional wine, and an introduction to the Bierzo. So it is, but just with a distinct personality.

Descendientes de J. Palacios

The small town of Corullón is set in a landscape of hills, amidst ancient slate-covered slopes, in a land of monks and pilgrimages (Compostela is not far away) and amongst Mencía grapes - an exceptional setting which Ricardo Pérez Palacios and Álvaro Palacios (Álvaro Palacios, Priorat) discovered in 1999. A new winery to join the Palacios dynasty (Palacios Remondo, in La Rioja), it extends to a total of 27 ha of vineyards scattered over nearly...
