Summary of Ricardo P. Palacios' appraisal of the 2011 vintage
It is astonishing how “less exceptional years in a climatic sense can reach sublime heights”. Thus Ricardo P. Palacios admires this quiet vintage, a good vintage, a vintage of serenity, which offers us some most attractive and marvellous wines.
The extraordinary conditions in Bierzo, along with the damp weather and the abundance of fruit, enabled the 2011 harvest to reach truly sublime heights, despite initial forecasts. Nature is so admirable, and 2011 shows the extent to which climatic conditions are crucial, and how they have influence both during the grapevine’s growth cycle and in the course of wine-making and the ageing of the wine.
November began a continuous cold period, in spite of the high level of rainfall received over the winter as a whole, providing conditions that benefitted the health of the grapevines, which reached spring in perfect condition. Until the end of May, the cold weather and snows held out in the mountains and it was this extremely damp weather which distinguished this year from the previous one. Sun, good temperatures and humidity were heralding an abundant harvest. There was spectacular growth.
The summer arrived early, hot and with just enough wetness. Extreme changes in temperature were a distinctive feature of the summer (contrasts between day and night) and defined the area's fundamental character: a continental climate touched by Atlantic and Mediterranean influences, which allow the wines to attain that delicate balance at their optimal point of maturity. With scarcely any rainfall, the grape harvest arrived with memories of the magnificent year before: dry weather which enabled the picking of a copious amount of grapes, bursting with ripeness, full of colour and flavour, and in an enviable state of health.

The small town of Corullón is set in a landscape of hills, amidst ancient slate-covered slopes, in a land of monks and pilgrimages (Compostela is not far away) and amongst Mencía grapes - an exceptional setting which Ricardo Pérez Palacios and Álvaro Palacios (Álvaro Palacios, Priorat) discovered in1999.
