Over the last decade, Castillo de Perelada has concentrated on establishing a diverse range of superior quality wines, singular and intrinsically different, such as the Finca Garbet and Finca Malaveïna lines. Produced as vineyard estate wines to portray the best of the Empordà region, the hand-picked grapes are harvested at the point of optimal ripeness to ensure powerful, concentrated wines with a high degree of structure and finesse.
The Finca Malaveïna, affording magnificent views of both the Mediterranean and the Pyrenees, lies in the Garriguella district of the Alt Empordà, just to the east of Perelada. Planting started on the 22 hectares of red clay slopes back in 1996, with the aim of producing remarkably characterful wines, and the trellised vines now yield around 5,000 kg per ha.
A deep shade of cherry red with a garnet rim, this wine has richly powerful red fruit aromas with hints of spice. Its fresh acidity and good structure show on the palate, while the fine array of flavours is due to long maceration and careful ageing of the blend: 50% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% each of Syrah and Garnacha.
Aged for 18 months in new French Allier oak barrels and the rest spent in bottle.
