Finca Dofí is the last link in the chain before reaching the grandeur of L’Ermita. Containing 95% Garnacha, Álvaro Palacios’s star grape, it is an absolute delight due to the purity of its aromas and most seductive with its irresistible silkiness. On the nose it is totally smooth and elegant, and it simply melts in the mouth; it is dense, rich, concentrated and full of vitality, yet it flows through the palate without a single blemish. A wine that merits a fine burgundy glass so as to enjoy to the full all its charm and crisp freshness.
Summary of Álvaro Palacios’s evaluation of the 2012 vintage
Álvaro Palacios has now spent twenty-four years in the Priorat and 2012 has been the driest year he has ever seen; also the best, with the most expressive and well-balanced vintage.
Winter was extremely dry and any hydric support consisted merely of the rains that fell between March and April: 121 litres. The total rainfall for the whole of 2012 amounted to a third of the accumulation in a normal year: barely 135 litres. The rain did not arrive until September, with 48 litres in two days.
Nevertheless, this drought situation has been transformed into an extraordinary vintage for aromatic concentration and expression thanks to the tremendous ability to adapt of the indigenous varieties (Garnacha and Samsó), assimilating the drought and heat, preserving the vegetation they needed for photosynthesis, and displaying admirable fortitude and freshness.
The effort made by the plants became obvious, however, in the size of the clusters, which were small and reached phenolic maturity with great freshness after the rains they received shortly before the harvest, washing the fruit so thoroughly it was cleansed almost to purification. Consequently, the wines are voluptuous and vibrant, very stimulating and rich in magical elements; wines with a long life ahead which will enable us to enjoy this indescribable and remarkable confluence between nature and tradition.
