Summary of Marcos Eguren's appraisal of the 2011 vintage in Toro
The 2011 grape harvest has been carried out with full ripening of the grapes, both in a physiological and aromatic and also phenolic sense, and featuring a high alcohol level.
The months of October and November were cool with light rain, and the month of December started off cold and very rainy, increasing the soil’s water reserves significantly for what would turn out to be a dry winter with mild temperatures. In spring the temperatures rose and a warm April brought forward the vegetative cycle; there was a notable lack of spring frosts.
At the end of April and beginning of May there was some occasional rainfall; a warmer period started, which favoured proper vineyard development, and full flowering was reached in the third week of May.
The early days of June recorded some storms with light rain and strong gusts of wind which coincided with bud burst, but the month continued with high temperatures and dry until the start of July, which was to be mild, cool in the morning and totally dry. After a hot August with light storms, September arrived very hot and totally dry, and the grape harvest started with some signs of water stress in the younger parcels, although proper growth development was maintained in all the vineyards. The harvest took place amidst high temperatures and a lack of rainfall, and with full ripeness.
