The wine
Bodega Virgen de la Sierra is situated at the foot of the Sierra de la Virgen mountain range, in the Ribota river valley. It is D.O Calatayud’s oldest winery and grew out of the dream and efforts of the whole community which decided to stop producing wine in their own family bodegas, having conceived the idea of creating one big communal project; almost 60 years further on and this cooperative venture has gone from strength to strength.
The vineyards are located in Villarroya de la Sierra, planted with bush vines on stony-rocky ground, at an altitude of between 750 and 1,100 metres, and lying in an area of low rainfall.
Albada 2008, when considering its ability to delight the senses, shows the organoleptic characteristics of a pure, exquisite Aragonese Garnacha yet at an unbeatable price. This wine fulfils all expectations: burgundy-red in colour with brick-red glints, displaying subtle tiny fruit aromas of raspberries followed by a certain moistness (damp wood), with lactic notes and hints of leather too. Coming through on the palate is a distinct acidity typical of this variety. Definitely an Atlantic-influenced wine, with fresh, citric-sharp tannins prevailing.
One well-placed to help in these hard times: Albada.
