Castillo de Perelada

The Castillo de Perelada estate is situated to the north-east of the town of Figueres, in the province of Girona in the far north-east of Cataluña by the French border. It falls within the DO Empordà region, where centuries ago the Ancient Greeks were cultivating vines around Empúries (the area is known as Ampurdán in Spanish).

The winery has extensive vineyards in a variety of locations, along the rugged Costa Brava and near the Alberes in the foothills of the Pyrenees, as this region encompasses vine-growing areas to the north (Alt) and east (Baix) of Girona city. The local climate is obviously Mediterranean, with the strong, northerly Tramontana wind making its presence felt. Winters are mild, resulting in few frosts, and the hot summers are cooled by sea breezes.

With a large number of vines and grape varieties under plantation, Castillo de Perelada has made the best of the different soil types found locally, with granite on the slopes, sandy valleys, alluvial on the plains, gravel and slate on the coast. There is documentary evidence proving that wine was made on the site as far back as the Middle Ages. This came to light when Miguel Mateu bought the buildings in 1923 and prompted him to restore the vine-growing tradition. Now the third generation of his family is involved in this successful enterprise, which in the early 1990s began to focus on the production of superior quality wines.

They offer an extensive range, including single varietals and ‘Finca’ wines (Malaveïna, Garbet, La Garriga and Espolla), representing specific terroirs, special blends and the individual personality of particular varieties.

Sparkling wine is also produced, based in Vilafranca del Penedès, at the heart of Cava production.

Two wineries in the Priorat are included in the group: Cims de Porrera and Casa Gran del Siurana.
